The expedition was one of four authorized in 1901 by Peru's Junta de Vias Fluviales to survey rivers for their economic potential. The Cipriani/Carbajal report was included in a 1904 publication of the Junta, Nuevas exploraciones en la hoya del Madre de Dios.
