This is one of the very earliest Mercator charts which would have been useful a useful tool for navigating at sea. It is a copper-plate engraving printed onto vellum, preferred by many seafarers at this time for its resistance to damp.
Shows rhumb lines, compass roses. Richly decorated with scrolls, mythical figurres.
